Prioritizing self- care and setting boundaries

In the next of this series, I will give you some strategies in prioritizing self- care and setting boundaries.

Strategy 1: Recgonizing the importance of self- care

Firstly, it is important to understand that self- care is not an act of selfishness, but rather an essential tool for your own well- being and productivity. If one does not love oneself, it is impossible for you to extend it out to love and show up for others.

Strategy 2: Establishing boundaries between work and personal life

Define specific cut off times for work and non- work activities. Avoid checking your work emails, or engaging in work- related tasks at designated personal times. Setting clear boundaries allows for better time management, prevents overcommitment (the power to say no!) and burnout.

Strategy 3: Communicate your boundaries

Ensure your boundaries are clearly communicated with your colleagues, superiors and clients. This can be either in the form of your availability, preferred methods of communications and cut off times. Good communication leads to mutual respect, trust and building of good relationships.

Strategy 4: Limit screen time

Excessive use of screens (especially on phones, tablets or computers) will contribute to eye strain, poor posture, sleep disturbances and a sedentary lifestyle. Studies have also shown that high screen time is linked to attention issues, and an increase in irritability and disconnection with real world relationships.

Strategy 5: Assess and reassess

Reguarly assess your workload, stress levels and overall well- being. Do not be afraid to adjust your strategies. Reflect on what is working and what is not. Ensure your strategies are adapted to your ever changing needs.
